TUI ALLIED HEALTH

Acupuncture

Support your body’s natural healing with targeted care.

Acupuncture is a therapy that involves stimulating specific points under the skin using very thin, sterile needles. It can help support the body’s natural healing processes, reduce pain, and improve overall wellbeing. At Tui Allied Health, acupuncture is offered by trained and registered practitioners in a safe, professional environment.

Our acupuncture service

At Tui Allied Health, acupuncture is integrated into a personalised care plan to complement other therapies. Your practitioner will discuss your symptoms, examine you, and outline the treatment options best suited to your needs.

Acupuncture is generally safe when provided by a qualified practitioner and is not recommended as a sole treatment for any health condition. There are two main types of acupuncture practiced in New Zealand:

Traditional Chinese acupuncture (TCM)

Often used to support a wide range of conditions including pain, mental health, fertility, digestion, respiratory issues, and more.

Western medical acupuncture

Commonly used by healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists to target pain and musculoskeletal problems.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture involves inserting thin, disposable needles into specific points on your skin to stimulate sensory nerves. This can:

  • Promote the release of pain-relieving molecules in the nervous system

  • Influence the brain and nervous system to support healing

  • Improve circulation and restore balance in the body

How acupuncture works

A typical session:

First session

up to 1 hour

Follow-up sessions

15-30 minutes each

  • Treatment course: usually 6-12 sessions depending on the condition.

  • Needles: 5-20 fine needles are gently inserted and left for 10-20 minutes; sometimes moved or twirled during treatment.

You may feel a mild aching or tingling sensation. Needles should not be painful - let your practitioner know if you experience discomfort. Minor bruising or soreness can occur afterward.
